castle in the sky

Castle in the Sky (Hayao Miyazaki, 1986) - 8/10

Another beautiful created film from Hayao Miyazaki. The animation and artwork is great, as always. Miyazaki has a way of creating different worlds -- the castle in Howl's Moving Castle, the forest in Princess Mononoke -- wanting to submerge myself into the tv screen. The floating castle in Castle in the Sky is no different. And the score by Joe Hisaishi creates a subtle mood and strong chemistry between the two main characters.

kitano's dolls

Dolls, my second Takashi Kitano film. My first Kitano film was The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi. Kitano's films are known for its gritty violence. We see Kitano's softer side in Dolls, as he presents three somewhat tragic and sad tales.

Dolls (Takeshi Kitano, 2002) - 9/10

The film includes three different stories intertwined together. In the first story, Matsumoto (Hidetoshi Nishijima) decides to marry a more successful bride over Sawako (Miho Kanno). Sawako's failed suicide attempt leaves her with the mind of a child. Matsumoto abandons the marriage to take care of Sawako. A red rope -- tied and connected to each other -- keeps them closer as they wander through parks, roads, forrests, and hills. A Yakuza boss, Hiro (Tatsuya Mihashi), after over 30 years seeks to find his long lost girlfriend whom he abandoned -- who promised to wait for him in a park until his return. A once successful pop star, Haruna (Kyoko Fukada - a real Jpop star) is left bandaged after a car accident. Her most devoted fan, Nukui (Tsutomu Takeshige), whose dream is to meet her finally gets the chance only after he's blind.

Each story is not told in succession, which is a good thing because I prefer the first story over the second and third. Kitano manages to take on a different style and approach with beautifully shot images. It is a film that stays with you after it ends.

"honey flash!"

Why did I see this movie? I'm not sure why either, but Eriko Sato is pretty good looking lol.

Cutie Honey (Hideaki Anno, 2004) - 8/10

I expected a cheesy movie something like Power Rangers. I was right, sort of. Semi-cheap special effects and costumed villains you might find watching Power Rangers. The formula for this film spells disaster from the start, seeing how it's a live action take on an old anime series by the same name. BUT......this movie was really, surprisingly good.

A girl is resurrected as an android after an accident. She has superpowers and the ability to transform into different costumes, when she yells "Honey Flash," hahahaha. She seeks to avenge her father's death and rescue a kidnapped scientist (her uncle), against the Panther Claws. There are four ridiculously costumed villains, Gold Claw, Black Claw, Cobalt Claw, and Scarlet Claw -- led by Sister Jill, which is actually a man.

WTF right? The movie doesn't try to be serious though, with some funny scenes. Even the more subtle moments captures the 'charm' of the main characters and movie.

blood: the last vampire

I don't really watch any anime except from Studio Ghibli. I managed to see this 45 min movie, cause someone told me it was good.

Blood: The Last Vampire (Hiroyuki Kitakubo, 2000) - 7.5/10

Blood: The Last Vampire tells of a girl (Saya) who must take down demon-like creatures that feed off human blood. The film consistently provided a dark and tense mood. The animation was well done. But sadly, this movie was too short. Less than an hour. If this movie was feature length, it had potential to be even better. There would be character development and background story of how and why things happen. I just slouched watching things happen and not sure why there are demons or who Saya is.
The anime series Blood+, I presume expands on this saga. But I'm avoiding it as any kind of series takes too long to follow. A live action movie is in the works -- Blood Vampire -- being directed by the director of Fearless and the horrendous Freddy vs. Jason.
Blood: the Last Vampire was still bloody entertaining (lol, lame pun).
